What is SoftOne eventually?
Is it a framework that is evolving into the Next Development Tool?
Should I write my next application in Delphi, .Net, C#, Java? Why not in SoftOne? Days like these make you wonder...

It’s hard to describe what I lived today:

I visited a customer who had installed Atlantis in 2005.
He asked for some services because he had ended his co-operation with the company that supported him. Mainly, he asked for reporting. And here I am in the uncomfortable position to create new reports in a new environment; I am so used to SoftOne environment that all the other seem an incredible fuss to me!

The customer also gave me a laptop with Atlantis already installed to help me!! But I thought cleverly. The past days I was trying the new Customization Tools (Objects, Dialog Objects, Database views, virtual tables, view tables, report Objects) so I thought I should take the Atlantis base, create a connection with SoftOne and since I have done Create base tables I would login in order to see the Atlantis tables as SoftOne custom tables. The first shot was unsuccessful because of the existence of common table names. From the created log I saw that there were only a few common tables. So I restored the Atlantis base and changed the names of the common tables. Specifically the common tables are COUNTRY, COMPANY, BRANCH, BANK, BANKBRANCH, GUARANTY, BUDGET and BUDGETDATA. I created tables with SoftOne and then login.

From that point on I discovered the Next Development Tool! In 5 minutes I created an index with the Customers table from Atlantis. A Database View in the Customers module, annexation to Object and everything OK. Now I can create indexes, group, classify and –why not- create, edit and delete a customer. I should show the customer how he can see his data in a SoftOne index format!

What is SoftOne eventually?
Maybe it has evolved into a significant Development Tool (and we haven’t even noticed it)…
